I knew my brother owned Velvet Revolver’s debut album CONTRABAND, and that it had been in his collection ever since it was first released in 2004. I decided to borrow the album from him, as I was desperate to listen to it after watching the Ozzfest 2005 footage. I only knew one Velvet Revolver song wich was the classic hit single SLITHER, wich I first heard on music video station, Kerrang, around eight years before.

The video featured the band performing in a tunnel with topless singer Scott Weiland standing and sliding along the walls, whilst posing at the camera. As a young teenager I enjoyed the song and but wasn’t a mature enough rock listener at the time to give the album it came from any attention. Before pressing play, I had a feeling I would enjoy CONTRABAND because three members of VELVET REVOLVER were previously in GUNS N’ ROSES, a band I had a lot of history listening to.

Melody and the Tyranny is an EP released by Velvet Revolver as a precursor to their album Libertad. It includes two tracks from Libertad as well as the Talking Heads cover “Psycho Killer” and a live rendition of “Do It for the Kids”, a song from Velvet Revolver’s debut album, Contraband. The documentary on the making of Libertad was Produced and Directed by Rocco Guarino. The EP received a European and Australian release and was not released in North America. It was limited to just 5,000 copies.

I listened to CONTRABAND twice and fell in love with the album. The songs had incredible versatility from anthems in “Big Machine”, to ballads like “Loving the Alien”, and provided elements of hard rock, metal, glam and punk. What took me so long to listen to this modern Sorum continued their remarkable chemistry as the bands rhythm section by showcasing huge riff, thunderous drum sounds and rhythmic bass lines. However, it was the former STONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman; SCOTT WEILAND, who made the record for me, as his grungy yet glam controlled style, showcased his abilities as a singer and songwriter.

“Fall to Pieces” was a personal highlight due to the meaning and integrity of the power ballad, along with the huge sing along chorus. The track was about Weiland’s problems with heroin addiction and on-going issues with his wife Mary Forsberg. This was demonstrated by the powerful and autobiographical accompanying music video in wich Weiland is saved by bassist Duff McKagan after overdosing in a nightclub toilet.

Watching this clip gave me an insight into Weiland’s wild lifestyle, and this reminded me of previosly reading rock journalist Eddie Trunk’s 2011 book, Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Trunk mentioned how Weiland’s substance abuse problems got him kicked out of Velvet Revolver in 2008.

Sabía que mi hermano era el dueño del álbum debut de Velvet Revolver, CONTRABAND, y que había estado en su colección desde que se lanzó por primera vez en 2004. Decidí prestarme el álbum, ya que estaba desesperado por escucharlo después de ver el Ozzfest 2005. Solo conocía una canción de Velvet Revolver, que fue el clásico single SLITHER, lo escuché por primera vez en la estación de videos musicales, Kerrang, aproximadamente ocho años antes.

El video mostraba a la banda tocando en un túnel con el cantante en topless Scott Weiland parado y deslizándose a lo largo de las paredes, mientras posaban ante la cámara. De joven me gustó la canción, pero en ese momento no era un oyente de rock lo suficientemente maduro como para darle al álbum cualquier atención. Antes de presionar play, tuve la sensación de que disfrutaría CONTRABAND porque tres miembros de VELVET REVOLVER estaban anteriormente en GUNS N ’ROSES, una banda que tenía mucha historia.

Lo que me tomó tanto tiempo para escuchar a este moderno Sorum continuó con su extraordinaria química como la sección de ritmos de las bandas al mostrar enormes riffs, sonidos de tambores atronadores y líneas de bajo rítmicas. Sin embargo, fue el ex líder de STONE TEMPLE PILOTS; SCOTT WEILAND, quien hizo el disco para mí, como su estilo sucio pero con control de glamour, mostró sus habilidades como cantante y compositor.

“Fall to Pieces” fue un destaque personal debido al significado y al poder integro de la balada, junto con el gran canto a lo largo del coro. La pista trataba sobre los problemas de Weiland con la adicción a la heroína y los problemas actuales con su esposa Mary Forsberg. Esto fue demostrado por el poderoso y autobiográfico video musical que acompaña al bajista Duff McKagan, quien salvó a Weiland luego de una sobredosis en un baño de un club nocturno.

Ver este clip me dio una idea del estilo de vida salvaje de Weiland, y esto me recordó a la lectura previa del periodista de rock Eddie Trunk en 2011, Essential Hard Rock y Heavy Metal. Trunk mencionó cómo los problemas de abuso de sustancias de Weiland hicieron que lo echaran de Velvet Revolver en 2008.
