Stone Temple Pilots, in their ongoing effort to reconnect with consumers after a few years of inactivity and uncertainty following singer Scott Weiland’s well-documented legal troubles, made good on their plan to shoot their next video in Los Angeles on Sunday evening by enlisting help from their loyal fans. The clip for the song “No Way Out,” from No. 4, was shot at the El Rey Theater, where approximately 100 lucky fans from among the 500 or so attendees (who won admission from alternative rock radio station KROQ) were given the chance to use their own hand-held cameras to catch the action.
All the video tapes were turned in to STP after the event, and one will be picked by the band members to be used as the group’s official new video. According to a band spokesperson, fans will get their tapes back in the mail in about two weeks, following production of the new clip. Before STP took to the stage, Meatplow and Crackerman played short sets. STP hit the stage and immediately got down to the business at hand. The group ran through “No Way Out” a number of times so that the filming fans, as well as the bands own camera crew, could get the best possible selection of shots.
Towards the end of each take of “No Way Out,” singer Scott Weiland would jump off the stage and run into the crowd where he was repeatedly hoisted above the audience by some of the burlier male fans. “I believe in what we do,” Weiland said after the last take of “No Way Out,” pointing to each of his bandmates. With the work portion of the evening completed, Weiland then introduced “Sour Girl,” the first of a five-song mini-concert, as “a very beautiful song that’s very dear to us.” Other STP tunes included the recent single “Down” and old favorite “Sex Type Thing,” which served as the evening’s encore.
Lest the filming portion of the evening get too repetitive, during some down-time between takes guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz jammed out instrumental versions of some classic rock cover tunes, including Rush ‘s “Freewill,” Led Zeppelin’s “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” and a portion of Deep Purple’s “Smoke On the Water.”
