The Stone Temple Pilots invited over 400 fans to bring their personal video cameras to a one-off concert at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night in order to help the group film its next video for “No Way Out”. The event was part of a KROQ radio station-sponsored contest that asked fans to shoot anything and everything from the time they’re chosen until STP performs the song itself.
“Four hundred of you will be asked to create the darkest, sickest, most ill and insanely funny footage of you and your friends’ concert preparation story,” frontman Scott Weiland told MTV News. “As well, we get live action footage of us, STP, providing the sonic and visual sexual extravaganza. You become the artist, us the subject”. At the end of the exclusive full-length show, fans will be asked to deposit their tapes in a collection box as they exit. After the tapes are viewed, the best of the best will be edited together for the clip. Following this process, the tapes will be sent back to the fans as a souvenir.
“We had been agonizing over which way to go with the video in terms of direction and were so noxious over the state of music videos today that we decided we should leave it up to our fans — the true rock music fans — who will have their part in turning back the tide of current Mouseketeer song and dance shame,” Weiland said in a statement announcing the event.
The final cut of “No Way Out” was air on MTV with a director’s credit that reads “The Listeners Of KROQ”.
