In November 20, 1993, the band was the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” with host Nicole Kidman. Brothers Shawn and Lonnie Tubbs help out again (guitar and percussion respectively) on the acoustic rendition of “Creep”, just like the night before for MTV’s Unplugged. “Naked Sunday” is performed by STP as a 4-piece electric band.

While on-air the band played Core cuts “Naked Sunday” and “Creep”, Stone Temple Pilots’ full 1993 Saturday Night Live rehearsal has leaked online. The most interesting part of the video comes 27 minutes in, when STP play an early version of “Hollywood Bitch”, which later appeared on 2001’s Shangri LA DEE DA. Audio of this has leaked before, but video has never been seen.

The video also sees Scott Weiland discuss how the band are playing a different arrangement of “Creep.” He said, “We’ve got to get used to it. We’re having to change our whole arrangement around. In other words, we have to get used to this arrangement, the 2 minutes less version”. Weiland also takes out his trademark megaphone for “Naked Sunday”.

Dean DeLeo even teases an acoustic version of the song. 24 minutes in, Dean also tests out the riff to “Meatplow”, which appeared on 1994’s Purple. The SNL guy also screws up STP’s name during the rehearsal.

Q: Where can I find a recording of ‘SIN’ from MTV Unplugged?

A: Sin from MTV Unplugged must be one of the most sought-after Stone Temple Pilots recordings ever. Over the years many people claimed to have it, but upon further inspection I always found that they actually have the recording of No Memory and Sin from a performance at the Reading Festival (August 29, 1993) in the U.K. That performance is not even close to ‘unplugged’. It’s the fourth track on the European ‘Sex Type Thing – Part 1’ single.

Now what’s up with the ‘real’ SIN from MTV Unplugged?. We got in contact with a reliable source who worked for MTV and had access to the network’s archives. But guess what? Sin wasn’t on the tapes there. Big Empty was there, so was Andy Warhol, the other song edited from the original broadcast. After some more research we were told that there were tape errors with the audio recording of Sin. This was only discovered after the show, and that’s why the band did not do a re-take of the song. Or at least, that’s what we were told back then.

More recently, forum regular Tyrant has delved deeper into this mystery. He spoke with the Tubbs brothers, who performed at the MTV Unplugged show with STP. As it turned out, Sin was never even performed according to them. The only question that remains is: Where is Andy Warhol’s video?. That answer can be given by Beth McCarthy-Miller, director of MTV Unplugged series and SNL.

Más recientemente, el foro Tyrant ha profundizado en este misterio. Habló con los hermanos Tubbs, que actuaron en el programa MTV Unplugged con STP. Como resultó, SIN nunca se tocó según ellos.
